History

Introduced to this country from Southern Europe by monks. It was used as a diuretic, for digestion, to promote menstruation, and for diseases of the stomach and urinary tract. The root was believed to increase the sex drive and, in this connection, was also used to treat venereal diseases. Furthermore garden lovage was one of the numerous remedies for the feared plague.
