History
Known as a medicinal plant for thousands of years. Monks introduced the plant from the Mediterranean to the cloister gardens of the North. It has been used by doctors for diarrhoea and cramps, in water for eye infections, in a poultice for gout, and the seeds were used as a pain-killer. In folk medicine the plant was used for coughing, shortness of breath and sore throat.
