Probably brought to Europe by Gypsies, who, among other things, used the plant as a stimulant for old horses for sale. An extract mixed in wine was used as a love potion. A woman who had taken such a glass of wine was an easy victim, since the the scopolamin reduces a person’s will. Was one of the ingredients in “witch’s ointment”.
