History

Was originally only known as a magic herb. The plant was one of the elements that made up a witch’s ointment, that medieval witches spread on themselves; and which had an hallucinogenic effect, causing them to believe that they had been to a feast with Satan. In 1749 a German “witch” was burned. The court records of the Inquisition indicate that she had made a witch’s ointment with deadly nightshade from a cloister garden.
