History

Used in antiquity as a medication for dropsy and insomnia, in the Middle Ages for the bites of poisonous animals, caughing, jaundice and sore throat. As a magic herb it protected against the evil eye, and, burned as incense, it kept the devil away. During witchcraft trials marjoram was burned when the suspects were tortured in order to prevent the devil from helping his assumed friends.
